About Paul E. Briggs Law in Surrey BC Canada

Experienced Legal Representation in Surrey, BC

Paul E. Briggs is a criminal defence lawyer with more than 25 years of experience defending individuals facing serious criminal charges throughout British Columbia. Based in Surrey, British Columbia, he represents clients throughout Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and across the province. His practice is centred on sexual assault defence, assault and other serious violent offences, criminal appeals, and the immigration consequences of criminal charges and convictions.

After earning an honours undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia, Paul obtained his law degree from the University of Victoria. Since being called to the British Columbia Bar, he has built a practice focused on criminal defence and related immigration matters, providing strategic legal advice to individuals facing some of the most serious allegations under the Criminal Code.

Over the course of his career, he has appeared before the Provincial Court of British Columbia, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and in matters before the Supreme Court of Canada. His extensive trial and appellate experience enables him to identify critical legal issues, carefully assess the evidence, and develop effective defence strategies tailored to the unique circumstances of each case.

Paul’s practice is centred on defending individuals accused of sexual assault, historical sexual assault allegations, and a broad range of other sexual offences, including sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation, and other complex sexual offence allegations. He also represents individuals facing assault, aggravated assault, domestic assault, weapons offences, and other serious violent crimes.

Defending these allegations often requires careful analysis of witness credibility, forensic evidence, police investigative procedures, and constitutional protections. He prepares every case with meticulous attention to detail, thorough legal analysis, and a defence strategy tailored to the evidence, the applicable law, and the unique circumstances of each client.

Paul also also represents and advises clients whose criminal charges or convictions may affect their immigration status in Canada. His practice includes matters involving criminal inadmissibility, permanent resident status, deportation proceedings, post-conviction remedies, record suspension applications, and the immigration consequences of criminal charges and convictions. By considering both the criminal and immigration implications of a case, he helps clients develop legal strategies aimed at protecting their rights and their future in Canada.

He has substantial experience representing clients whose criminal matters intersect with immigration law. In one notable case involving a sexual assault conviction, he successfully represented a client on appeal, resulting in the conviction being overturned after the court concluded that a miscarriage of justice had occurred. He then assisted the client with the related immigration process, including the necessary applications and proceedings that ultimately allowed the client to return to Canada.

Beyond his courtroom advocacy, Paul E. Briggs is committed to legal education and community engagement. He contributes legal education articles to Dial A Law of People's Law School,  supporting the organization's mission to improve public understanding of the law.
